How do I prevent my child from joining a gang?

  • Spend quality time with your child – have meals together, go on walks or to the park and just spend time talking as a family.
  • Get involved in your child’s school activities
  • Be a good role model and set the right example all the time
  • Know your child’s friends and their parents
  • Talk to your child about peer pressure and what to do when it happens
  • Get your child involved in positive activities when they are not in school. Make sure those activities are adult supervised. Know where you children are at all times.
  • Make your neighborhood a safe place. Create an neighborhood alliance, get involved in neighborhood councils, report graffiti.
  • Talk to your child about the dangers of gang involvement and what can happen to them, their friends or their family if they get involved. Let them know you want them to be safe because you care.
  • Don’t give up! Set limits and consequences and follow through. Tell your child you will not allow them to:
    • Hang out with gang members
    • Attend parties sponsored by gangs
    • Use hand signs or language that is gang related
    • Wear clothing specific to gangs.
